Profile on Shoshannah Stern. @Shoshannah7 #Supernatural #EileenLeahy
The CW’s longest running show Supernatural is about two Kansas born brothers named Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) traveling a tragic road so far (in their classic 1967 Impala affectionately referred to as Baby)to “work” the family business of hunting supernatural evil and saving lives.
Last year, these unsung heroes learned that through their father’s bloodline, they were legacies of the mysterious organization known as The Men of Letters. This season, the boys have uncovered the unsavory practices of the British Men of Letters(BMOL). With a sophisticated arsenal of unique weaponry to eradicate the world of monsters, the BMOL also have no qualms resorting to torture and murder to achieve their goals.
Supernatural has been a show that has gravitated around the heroic Winchesters. But sometimes even heroes can use some help. Enter Eileen Leahy, portrayed by the impressive Shoshannah Stern.
Viewers were first introduced to Eileen in the Season 11 episode Into The Mystic. Eileen is a young woman orphaned as a baby when a banshee killed her parents and rendered her hearing impaired from its frightening sound. When Eileen crossed paths with the Winchesters in their hunt of the banshee, she proved instrumental in defeating the monster.
Supernatural may be considered a horror show for its stories involving monsters, but I would argue that at its heart, relationships and the self-discovery of the individual striving to hold on to his or her free will is what drives the narrative. We see in with the Winchesters and in other characters that create the fabric of the show. Free will is an empowering thing; what choices do we make in our lives for ourselves and for the betterment of society as a whole?
Eileen Leahy is the first character with hearing challenges to grace the Supernatural landscape and Shoshannah Stern plays her with aplomb. Through Stern’s interpretation, Eileen is a woman who used the tragedy of losing her parents not as an excuse for anger at the world, but as her calling to help others. Stern shows Eileen as a woman of both strength and vulnerability. Eileen (also as a legacy, a Woman of Letters) has already proven herself to be an invaluable ally for the Winchesters. She is a testament to the empowerment of women.
Stern returns to Supernatural as Eileen Leahy in the April 6th episode “The British Invasion.” I’m looking forward to seeing more of Shoshannah Stern as this intriguing character.
