I founded Arlene Miller Creative Writing in memory of my mother Arlene Miller (August 24, 1924-May 10, 2005) to recognize & support all forms of creative expression.

May 10th is Donna Jacobs’ birthday. Here is a birthday poem that I wrote in her honor.

I have often stopped to consider,
When the clouds have captured my gaze,
That nature is pure beauty in its perfect paradox,
That comes alive on the rainy days.

Is there some conspiracy?
Once Heaven weeps, and the clouds shed a host of tears?
When the greatest mystery seems,
That the roar of thunder can calm one’s deepest fears?

Then the contradiction is born,
As Earth prepares to dry,
Like Monet in his brilliance,
A rainbow paints the sky.

A feast of vibrant colors,
Gratefully have come alive,
A rainbow blooms on tears,
And like courage it survives.

Whenever I think of a rainbow,
My thoughts spring to Donna, it is true,
For many who know of her smile and positivity,
Can’t begin to fathom all of life’s challenges that she has been through.

Have there been sleepless nights
when her mind replayed some of her ordeals?
Yet, never see Donna as a tragic figure,
For faith and gratitude serve as her touchstone in which to heal.

The clouds may nurse a broken heart,
So desperately they cry,
But even in their sorrow,
A rainbow paints the sky.

A rainbow blooms on tears,
But I suspect that courage lends a hand,
All you have to do is to look at Donna,
And no doubt you’ll understand.

Donna is the first to admit,
That she has made her share of mistakes,
But faith has been that flawless blueprint of her life,
To guide her every moment she wakes.

Does her heart know the answers?
The past she doesn’t fear,
Rather, Donna mines her struggles to help others,
With her sincerity she does endear.

A poet is truly never doubtful,
The whispers of courage, however faint, can always be heard,
A poet will pay tribute to Donna,
With the strength of heartfelt words.

A rainbow blooms on tears,
But I suspect that courage lends a hand,
All you have to do is to look at Donna,
And no doubt you’ll understand.
