How reading and writing helps me cope with depression

How reading and writing helps me cope with depression

I suffer from anxiety and depression; this affliction has been my painful albatross since 1990. On the days where my anxiety and depression become overbearing, I chose to completely disconnect from the world. Admittedly, social interaction is probably my least favorite thing to do generally, but for the most part, if I surround myself around creative types, that fuels my own creativity and appreciation for others’ contributions to creative expression so it’s a win win.

Reading and writing helps me cope with depression. Usually, I write between 6 and 10 new poems every day, 365 days a year. I’ve learned from personal experience that raging emotions can be a very dangerous thing. Reading and writing enables me to look outside of myself; it calms me.

Writing and publishing my poetry books, writing articles, being a book reviewer for The Nerdy Girl Express and Readers Review Room, recognizing and supporting various forms of creative expression and promoting artists, authors and musicians through Arlene Miller Creative Writing are my beneficial tools in my fight against anxiety and depression.

Arlene Miller Creative Writing, named in memory of my mother, seeks to be that positive voice on social media where creative expression isn’t hindered but cherished as it should be.

  1. “… raging emotions can be a very dangerous thing.” Though “raging” and “quiet” are hardly synonyms, your post made me think of Thoreau’s “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” I will ignore his sexism as I go on. What you go on to say about writing is what got me thinking about expression and the repression of expressing what you feel, and how detrimental that can be. Perhaps so many lead lives of quiet desperation because they do not express themselves or share their creativity. There is something so liberating about sharing. Thank you for sharing your insights in this wonderful post – I am happy that creative expression has been so truly meaningful for you!
